Organic Cotton
What distinguishes organic cotton from standard cotton?
Organic cotton is not grown all year round on the same soil, but alternately with other plant species. This preserves natural soil fertility while reducing the susceptibility of cotton to disease and pests. Another means of pest control is the simultaneous sowing of other plants in and around the cotton.
The organic cotton is also hand-harvested to avoid chemical defoliants. The most important distinction of organic cotton is the abandonment of chemical pesticides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers. The use of manure and compost as a natural fertilizer is a bio-alternative to the artificial variants that damage the soil and the cotton. Natural fertilizers increase the humus content of the soil, which in this condition can store more water and CO2.
Certified organic cotton
Cotton may only be labeled organic if it complies with organic farming guidelines. Establishments and products that have been awarded these terms are visited at least once a year by an independent testing institute and it is checked that the rules and prohibitions are complied with. Organic farms need to make their production accessible and disclose the flow of goods so inspectors get accurate insights. Both during storage and during transport, our textiles are managed separately and do not come into contact with foreign materials.
Advantages of fair-produced organic cotton
The benefits of organic cotton can be quickly enumerated. The farmers receive a very high price for their goods. Thus, these farmers have a clear advantage that their existence is assured and they can improve their living conditions on and on. Organic cotton promotes social justice!
Another advantage is, of course, the ban on child labour. In addition, organic cotton offers advantages for the entire textile value chain, since all market participants, from the producer of cotton to spinning mills but also weaving mills and garment manufacturers, have to comply with organic standards.
A clear advantage also results for our environment. Sustainable agriculture means less pollution, eco-products are clearly a growing sector, and consumers can consume the ecological clothing of fair trade natural fibre in good conscience.
Organic cotton has a much higher quality than conventionally grown cotton, due to the fact that the organic cotton is hand-picked.
Our organic cotton comes mainly from Turkey (Aegean) and Greece, which has the additional advantage that we do without long, polluting transport routes.
A clear advantage for the consumer is, of course, besides the ecological aspects, that cotton is very hard-wearing. It is easy to wash, comfortable to wear, tear-resistant and absorbs a lot of moisture. It is very skin-friendly and gentle on our entire organism.
